MOVING A COMPUTER to a new room and/or jack:

PRE-REGISTRATION:

AEM controls jacks in these buildings:

• Akerman Hall
• Shepherd Laboratories

Permission to connect your machine to the Network will not be given until ALL of the information in the
Computer Registration Form
is filled in and submitted to
Enet (enet@enet.umn.edu)
(ASCII TEXT ONLY - other forms will be refused - use a text editor like NOTEPAD, VI, EMACS, or Textedit to edit the form - DOCUMENT Editor files are NOT ASCII TEXT).

Notes and WARNINGS:

• All AEM University Owned Computers, Laptops and Network Capable Devices (including switches) MUST be REGISTERED

  - Even if they will never connect to the Network.
  - Even if they will only be connected via wireless (or even a cell phone connection).



• DO NOT CONNECT any device to any Network port in Akerman Hall nor Shepherd Hall (nor move/disconnect any Networked Device / Computer) without first consulting AEM Computer Staff.


• Computers owned by outside entities but used for any University purpose MUST also be REGISTERED
  - Please make the ownership clear when registering them.
  - Example: A Machine supplied for research work but owned by a company.


• There may be ports controlled by OIT (A.K.A. Etherjack), for these we must contact OIT directly before connecting to them. So ask us in any case (we can let you know what we need).



• Jacks are generally assigned for one machine only and ONLY that specific assigned machine should be connected to an assigned jack.
  (If you connect any other machine, we will turn the jack off - WITHOUT NOTICE - we also may turn off the jack of a machine that was plugged into the wrong jack).

  Note: We can assign multiple machines to a single jack - but only one may be connected at a time.



• We may require any Windows machines which are University Property to be attached to University of Minnesota Active Directory immediately after they are given Network access.
  UNIVERSITY POLICY - All University Owned Computers MUST be securely run and configured - this is mostly handled by attaching them to AD.


• Only University Equipment and Equipment used for University Business REGISTERED may be connected to the wired Network jacks in the building
  (see exceptions - next 2 items).


• We can connect machines from outside entities to the network; but, they must be run securely (please be very specific as to why they need to be networked - they cannot be connected to University of Minnesota Active Directory due to licensing restrictions).


• Personal Computers used for personal purposes SHOULD use Wireless ("eduroam").
  However, if wireless is not availabe for some reason, we may allow personal machines REGISTERED to use a wired jack.


• Open Ports will only be made available in Conference rooms and other public areas.


• You may not install servers of any kind (File/Printer Sharing, Remote Desktop, Web, Telnet, ftp, kazaa, EDonkey, IIS, Mail, Exchange, and many more) without prior permission of AEM Computer Staff. For more information see: The Enet Policy Page



• DO NOT CONNECT any ROUTERS, BRIDGES, nor WIRELESS ACCESS DEVICES to ANY University connected Network (this includes University wireless).

  NO Network Switches may be used on Enet networks without approval by AEM Computer Staff.

  Make sure to remove any bridge network interfaces
  - as attaching a machine acting as a router or switch or bridge is forbidden on ANY University Network
  This also includes any device which allows network sharing or wireless access to any University Network (including any University Wireless network).



• If you plan on using Virtual Machines, You Must Consult with AEM Computing Staff before proceeding (or you may find your network port shut off if you don't - this is technically a form of network sharing).
