Austenitic Magnetostriction Constants

Ni2MnGa Austenitic Magnetostriction Constants

This photo shows the temperature/specimen stage used for the austenitic magnetostriction constant measurements. The stage was heated and cooled with water supplied by a Polystat water bath and had a temperature range of 70 to -5°C. The stage was mounted between the pole pieces of a Lakeshore 1.5T electromagnet and could be rotated to apply fields in [100] and [011] specimen directions. Strain gage and thermocouple are visible in the photo.

Cubic magnetostriction constants l100 and l111 were calculated for a range of temperatures from 50°C down to -9°C. The onset of the martensitic transformation is evident in the rapid decrease of l100 at low temperatures.
