Configuring your MacOS System to Print to AEM/Enet Managed Printers (with SAMBA/CIFS)

Please Note: These instructions were created for MacOS 10.13, 10.12, 10.11, 10.10, 10.9, 10.8 and 10.7



Open 'System Preferences"


Open 'Printers & Scanners' in 'System Preferences"



Click on the '+' under the left pane to add a printer.

( NOTE: read the instructions below this image to add the "Advanced" Icon )


Right Click (or Ctrl-Click) to bring up the control menu for Add Printers
select 'Customize Toolbar...' and drag the advanced (looks like a ships wheel) item to the top of the Add Printers tab


click on this new 'Advanced' Icon


Next, select
Device type: 'Windows printer via spoolss'
from the list of printer device types.

Device: Another Device
Device URI: smb://sp.ad.enet.umn.edu/{printername}
( NOTE replace "{printername}" with the actual name of the printer )
Name: The name you want to see on your list of printers (AEM/Enet suggests same as {printername} above)
Location: whatever you like (leave blank)

Print Using: select the manufacturer and model-specific PPD file for the printer (generic works for most printers) you can change the model after the printer is added

The below example is for our printer named "pdf" (which emails a pdf of your print job back to you):


When finished configuring the printer profile, click the 'Add' button - it should be ready for printing.



When you print, it will ask for your Username and password. You must provide your UofM AD username (Internet-ID) as:
AD\username
