Computational Structural Analysis

Catalog Description:

 

Application of finite element methods to problems in structural analysis. Emphasis on properly posing problems and interpreting calculation results. Use of commercial FEA packages. Introduction to the theory of finite elements.

Format of Course:

 

3 hours of lecture per week

 

Computer Usage:

 

Matlab program files (locally written 3-D truss analysis program)

ANSYS (Commercial FEA package)

 

Course Objectives:

 

This course introduces computational analysis of structures and the practice of using programs to solve structural problems. Background in finite element analysis is developed.

 

Course Outcomes:

 

Students who successfully complete the course will demonstrate the following outcomes by tests, homework, and written reports.

 

  1. Ability to formulate a properly posed structural analysis problem.
  2. Ability to solve structural analysis problems using a FEA package.
  3. Basic understanding of finite element analysis.
  4. An understanding of the use of structural analysis as a design tool.
  5. Ability to communicate analysis results effectively.
