Starting Fall 2015 this program is only for students who need to maintain full time status for financial aid or other reasons while they do an off-campus internship during the Fall or Spring semesters. The courses AEM 4796 and 4896 no longer count for technical elective credit.
The practical engineering experience obtained through the internship or co-op programs not only enhances a student's education but also gives an edge on future employment after graduation. In general, the AEM Department does not directly match students with employers but does provide information on the availability of positions both locally and nationally. Students will receive 3 academic credits by taking AEM 4796, Professional Experience.
The Internship Program
The AEM Intern Program provides students with industrial experience during their junior and senior years. Usually, interns complete a one-semester industrial assignment (often in the summer) and can obtain credit for their experience upon submission of a technical report.
Through the intern program, students gain an understanding of an engineer's role in industry while earning technical elective credits. They are able to apply their knowledge of fundamental theory to the solution of practical problems, and may be influenced in their selection of elective courses.
The experience is thus educational, motivational, and helpful financially. A good intern experience is essentially the beginning of a career, and having the experience on a resume will be very helpful when students enter the full-time job market.
The Co-op Program
Co-op program consists of multiple terms off campus and may be arranged in special cases. The Co-op program almost always substantially prolongs the time required to graduate. Anyone interested in a Co-op program should consult with the Intern Program Director.
