Freshman Seminar changes for 2017-2018

See Freshman Seminar Changes Email from the Provost -- they are now not topics courses. As CSE does not get any funding for these, the value of designating them as Freshman Seminars in ECAS compared to the extra work involved is reduced. If you want to keep your topics course for freshman, just don't call it a Freshman Seminar anymore (which is what AEM did). You can rename your 1905 course as the number is no longer special either.

NOTE: courses marked as Freshman seminars are automatically deactived after their effective term so you will have to reactivate these every time. I don't see the point in making ones you want to give every year a freshman seminar. Just keep it as a topics course.

More Requirements from the Provost's Office:

ECAS Best Practices 2015.7 (pdf) -- this is all ill advised. If the database is not relational, then why can my TwoStop show all the equivalencies correctly? They have you playing with the internal name of the equiv even thought it's not used other than as a label. I also can't imagine a cross-listed pair of courses that were not equivalent (there is now a cross-listed check box in ECAS, so schedule information is now being put in ECAS -- again TwoStop shows cross-listed courses on the schedule without this ECAS information). This goes on the shelf next to the requirement that there be a student ready syllabus before the course is in the course catalog.

2015-6-9 CCC Topics Approval Process

UGRD career topics courses (the ones handled by this committee) may now only repeat topics twice unless they are freshman seminars, etc. The the following documents from the Provost's office for the details:

In addition when topics are submitted in ECAS their description and syllabus (if the second time) should be entered into the history box.

Use the TwoStop Quick Course Catalog to check if a topic is a repeat (check the show topics box when doing your search).

2015-4-20 Upgrade Changes to ECAS


In particular, note that the prerequisties text is no longer in a separate box and is included with the desrcription after "prereq:" Also, prerequisites no longer use the symbols (&, #, etc) and things like concurrent registration allowed are written out. See the next item:

Robert Wilson forwarded an inquiry from you regarding ECAS and how prerequisites should appear. Soft prerequisites can be entered at the end of the Catalog Description field. Generally, they are prefaced by "Prereq:" and then the various requirements are listed. Typically you would not want to use symbols here such as the "#" or "%" but as catalog editor I will also be reviewing this information for accuracy and cleaning up any obvious errors. When I have a question, I can always email the submitter or send it back to a prior level for clarification. If you have other questions, please let me know.

Lab Courses

It would help if lab courses said "Lab" in their descriptions.

Campus CC Procedures start 2013-3-31

See Campus CC Procedures (pdf) for the procedures on approval of new courses. I would point out the following:

  • It is now mandatory that a nicely formatted PDF syllabus accompany all new course submissions.
  • The CSE CC Chair will handle transmission of syllabi to the CCC.
  • Provisional approval will not happen as quickly as before and may affect your ability to schedule courses if you leave them to the last minute.
  • This only applies to undergraduate courses which are defined as UGRD career in ECAS, which covers some of the 5xxx level courses (this is also the definition used in CSE for what courses are handled by this committee).
  • Changes to courses will not need Provost approval and ECAS will not route them to the Provost level (currently being worked on).
  • Topics for topics courses count as changes and will go through immediately in ECAS as well.

GRAD Career 5xxx level courses -- 2011-11-9

These courses are now being handled by the College Graduate Studies Committee. Assoc. Dean Wayne Galdfelter ( is handling ECAS approvals for these courses. This committee will continue to handle UGRD Career 5xxx level courses.

IT to CSE Renaming Issues -- 2010-6-15

With the coming college name change, all references to IT in the course catalog (which included over 200 prerequisites) needed to be changed to CSE. This has been done centrally by a script to avoid needing to do all these changes by hand, but you should all check your courses over in the catalog to see if there are any problems caused by these changes. These changes have been entered with Fall 2010 effective dates, but the on-line catalog is showing them now as it always shows future course information for registration purposes.

If you have any pending changes in ECAS, you will also need to check that they do not contain old prerequisite text with IT in them.

The only courses with IT in the title were the Math courses, which have now been changed to "CSE Calculus", etc. You will need to update any advising materials you have that mention the calculus courses names specifically.

In addition all IofT courses are now CSE courses.

Technology and Society Theme -- 2010-4-20

Jim Stout reports that their GEO 1012 was easily approved in part due to the table they included in the syllabus showing how the theme material was integrated throughout the course, see the GEO1012 Syllabus (PDF) last page for the table.

Honors Courses (H or V) -- 2009-10-19

UHP has requested that I run all all Honors Courses through them before I bring them to this committee. Changes that I feel are technical details (the changes that I approve immediately and put in the "For Information" section of the meeting agendas) will not be sent to UHP. New Courses or adding an H/V to an existing course need to be approved by UHP first. Jeanne Anderegg ( is the UHP staff contact on this. Adding an H/V to an existing course will not also require ITCC approval.

2010-4-21 update: This will probably change when ECAS approvals are updated to include UHP for honors courses.

WI Proposals -- 2008-12-1

Will Durfee is chair of the WI committee and he requests you run all WI course proposals by him first.
