Catalog Description: |

Starting with a survey of
different forms and types of energy and material (focus on those needed for
computer components, mobile phones and solar panels) resource and their
geographical distribution, the course will briefly examine how they form, where
they are located, how they are extracted, and how reserves are defined.
Connection between geographical distribution of these resources and plate
tectonic processes are explained. Students are asked to explore the political
stability and economic status of countries that host those resources and how
these issues affect the access to these resources. The course will then examine
present-day and historical energy use, including per capita, per nation, and
percentage of GDP (gross domestic product), and guide students to make the
connection between energy use and population increase as well as the change in
the standards of living. The second half of the semester will be largely
student-led and focus more on the societal issues related to energy use such
as: (1) environmental problems associated with energy and metal extraction and
presence/absence/adequacy of policies that regulate these practices; (2) effect
of our lifestyle choices on energy consumption; (3) true cost of producing
energy, food, and other goods (life cycle assessment); and (4) consideration of
ecosystem services vs. the value of energy or other resources produced or
extracted. If time allows, we will also examine different policies toward
renewable energy and/or GHG (greenhouse gas) emission enacted by different
countries or states and discuss whether similar policies could be enacted in
the US or in Minnesota. Student-led class discussion of topics constitute the
bulk of the second half of the course. Applied for approval for Liberal
Education curriculum for the Environment theme.
Old:
Geologic aspects of
energy/material resources. Resource size/life-times. Environmental consequences
of resource use. Issues of international/public ethics associated with resource
production, distribution, and use. |
