Lab Facilities

Much of our current experimental work is in collaboration with Professor Bharat Jalan. We also work extensively in the Nanofabrication Facility and the College of Science and Engineering Characterization Facility at UMN .

Synthesis

Arc melting system

A Thermal Analyst arc melting system is available for preparation of approximate 0.5 inch dia buttons, with purging (to 10-6) and gas handling capability.
Bridgman-Stockbarger crystal grower

A Crystalox crystal grower for growth of bulk 2.5 cm x 10 cm under atmosphere or vacuum to 10-6 Torr. This crystal grower has a recently refurbished cold crucible attachment that allows for melting and simultaneous levitation of conductive samples, for substantially contamination-free preparation of bulk alloy buttons approximate 1 cm in diameter.

Process

Furnace

A Lindberg 1500 0C vertical furnace for heat treatment and a glass-forming facility with turbopump for enclosing specimens in quartz tubes under vacuum.
Machining

An electron discharge machine for shaping the conductive bulk specimens.
Self-Assembling

A state-of-art rotating pool for self-assembling objective materials.

Characterization

Microscopy with DIC

The optical microscope with temperature gradient stage for microstructure characterization.
Optical System

The optical system integraded laser source for imaging is used to quantitatively analysis the microstructure of martensite variants.
